Data center cooling — distributed systems

Distributed system for data center cooling control.

Distributed control of data center cooling

For a cooling distribution unit (CDU) prototype intended for data center infrastructure, a distributed control architecture was developed with multiple units working together.

The system uses multiple CDU units per facility (one master, the others slaves) with automatic failover of the master role in case of failure. The project was carried out through Gecko Design.

Key elements:

  • Distributed architecture with multiple CDU units
  • Automatic master role failover
  • Siemens PLC, TIA Portal and SCADA (C#/WPF)
Data center cooling — distributed systems

Development of a distributed control architecture

A control architecture was developed on the Siemens PLC platform with a SCADA layer and automatic failover algorithms, ensuring continuous cooling even in the event of a single unit failure.

  • 01 Distributed control architecture on the Siemens PLC.
  • 02 Master/slave failover algorithms for high availability.
  • 03 SCADA layer in C# / WPF for monitoring and control.
  • 04 Development of the CDU prototype through partner Gecko Design.

High cooling availability through a distributed system

The distributed architecture enables continuous cooling even when a single unit fails, thanks to automatic takeover of the master role — which is critical for the reliability of data center infrastructure.

The project demonstrates the ability to design complex distributed control systems with high availability requirements.

  • 01 Automatic master role failover.
  • 02 Continuous cooling even on unit failure.
  • 03 Distributed architecture for data center infrastructure.
